ATAK only knows what's on the device in your hand.
Put two phones on two different networks — one on LTE, one on home Wi-Fi a county away — and they can't see each other. No shared map, no chat, no markers.
A TAK server sits in the middle. Every device connects to it, and anything one person puts on the map reaches the rest of the team — positions, markers, routes, chat, photos and alerts.
Running one yourself means a VPS, a domain, TLS certificates, firewall rules, updates and someone to fix it when it stops answering at 2 a.m. We hand you the server and keep all of that off your plate.

Users enroll from ATAK, WinTAK or TAK Aware with a username and password. Certificates are issued by the app — no files to pass around.

Install the Server Manager plugin you get at checkout and run the whole server from ATAK — users, groups, data packages. The web Admin Console works too. We keep the server running.

Before you sign up
Do I need a TAK server?
If your team is ever on different networks — cell, home Wi-Fi, Starlink — yes. Without a server, ATAK devices only see each other on the same local network or over a mesh radio link. With one, everyone on any internet connection shares the same map.
What do I actually get?
Your own OpenTAKServer instance at yourteam.district47.dev, with TLS certificates, an admin login, and a connection guide for your users. You manage users and data; we manage the server.
How do my users connect?
In ATAK, WinTAK or TAK Aware, add a server with your address, then sign in with the username and password you created for them. The app enrolls its own certificate.
Can I manage the server from ATAK?
Yes. The District47 Server Manager plugin is provided at checkout. Install it in ATAK and you can manage the entire server from your device — add and remove users, set up groups, push data packages, and open support tickets. Prefer a bigger screen? Everything is also in the web Admin Console.
Can I pick my server address?
Yes — you choose the first part at checkout (for example yourteam). If it's taken, we'll email you before setup to pick another. Addresses live under district47.dev; custom domains aren't offered.
What does it cost?
$49.95 for the first month, which covers setup. Then $9.95 a month. No contract and no cancellation fee.
What happens when I cancel?
Billing stops at the end of the month you cancel. We keep your server and its data for 30 days so you can come back or export what you need. Ask us and we'll wipe it immediately instead.
Does it work with no cell service?
No. Every device needs a data connection — cell, Wi-Fi or satellite — to reach the server. For off-grid links, look at our mesh and radio hardware.
Can it federate with other TAK servers?
Not yet. Federation isn't supported by OpenTAKServer today.
Who do I contact for help?
Submit a support ticket through the Server Manager plugin in ATAK. You can also reach us through the contact page; include your server address and what's going wrong.
